68. Started to learn about teleprinters while at W3ABT in 1967. Built the Irv Hoff designed TT/L-2 in September 1968 which led to many RTTY QSOs worldwide. Took this knowledge to my first real job at Western Union Telegraph as the resident engineer for the Philadelphia Telex exchange (800 trunks and 1200 subscriber lines). This was a very large circuit switching machine, a CSR-4 designed by ITT Milan, that handled as much trunk to trunk traffic as it did trunk to subscriber traffic. Lost interest in Ham Radio as my job responsibilities took more and more of my time. But, I did acquire a Collins FRT-24 from W3CRO, a local ham with deep roots in Bell of Pa and amateur RTTY.
Two years later became Manager of Circuit Switching Systems for Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware. This included the private teleprinter network for GSA as well as a 2400 baud broadband system and a PBX voice system for the Philadelphia Stock Exchange.
Eight years later moved to a staff position at the Regional office before becoming the Field Service (Outside Plant) District Manager for Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware.
After Western Union, moved to SEI Investments when it was transitioning it's nationwide customer data network from an async to IBM based synchronous network. After SEI Investments, moved to Shared Medical Systems with a nationwide WAN that was 500,000 in length and handled 30% of all Health related transactions in the USA. Shared Medical Systems was acquired by Siemens Medical in 2000 I stayed there for four years before I retired in 2004 and got back to teleprinters, RTTY and Ham Radio.
Between 2004 and 2015, I've been able to work 300 countries of HF and get DXCC on all ham bands between 80M and 10M. I am the current WAE Trophy Toplist leader for RTTY.
