I am in my 60s and run the SMECC museum - SMECC was started back in
the 80's.
Always remember seeing teletypes growing up and in our AFCS squadron
we had teletype repairmen that maintained the weather teletypes on bas
and at SAGE 26 AD across the street from Luke AFB - so it was interesting
to see them work on the units.
Also would visit March AFB to see people I had talked to over the
radio they showed me all the teletype stuff they were using.
In the 70s a friends fixed me up with a model 14 typing reperf with
celluloid top keys ( I want one back like it!) Bought a used tube TU from a
ham store and would print stuff on tape. I got a 28 ksr so I could print
the teletype art.
I met Ray Morrison ( of Illinois Bell Teletype Fame..)when he was getting
ready to move to live with his daughter and he was only allowed to take
3 teletypes with him... the baudot stuff went to the Deaf and Hard of
Hearing and he gave me lots of ASCII units that were part of the start of
my computer company. One of the nicest people I have ever met. His
collection of Byte and Killobaud Microcomputing magazines was the start of the
the computer history library. I also learned a lot about teletypes from
him too. ...... ok...so crank the clock ahead some to recent times!
We have teletypes in journalism displays and also sitting near radios,
ASCII Teletypes for our computers but the part that interests me the
most is the history of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing re-purposing Bell and
Western Union teletypes to form a communications network around the united
states for all of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing folks to use.
Our first group of Deaf material that really kicked off that part of
the collection came from a deaf fellow that posted here in green keys a
number of years back. This happened exactly at the time I had been
studying about it! ( Yea I believe in events lining up on a timeline!) There
were 15s a 19 many 28s but also an amazing timeline of the electronic 5
level machines that followed on.
It was like the majority of the timeline of history all in one shot.
There were also many nice books and amazing collection of parts. We
added more to it and continue to do so. In addition we collect anything
related to Deaf and Hard of Hearing technology culture and history.
If you have any that filtered into your collection let us know! we are
interested!
We also like model 31 teletypes and are looking for more especially the
military one that has the round connector in the back and the red pilot
lights on the front and the 25z5 tube in it!
Anyway there is more history mixed in with all of this and lots of
stories and adventures but there is a little bit
Ed Sharpe Archivist for SMECC see some of the history here!
