Interesting and simple design. This circuit does away with the buffer transistors I added between the RS-232 interface and the TTY for both transmit and receive.
On transmit to the TTY, I was worried about the +15v swing allowed by the RS-232 input exceeding the Vbe spec of the PNP transistor, so I used input transistors to hide the RS-232 signal from the PNP transistor that drives the TTY receive loop.
On receive from the TTY, I used a transistor to buffer the signal to the RS-232 output. This solution drives it directly from the loop.

It’s still in the bag. I imaged both side of the PCB. The schematic is straightforward with probably the most difficult part being building or obtaining the plus and minus 12v supply. http://retrowagon.org/wiki/index.php/20ma_current_loop_to_RS-232_conversion This conversion from deRamp designed for the Teletype Model 33 reportedly uses near 0 level for the minus. http://altairclone.com/teletype.htm I bought the parts, but haven’t built it yet as I’m still trying to get my KSR working in local mode. - Jeffa KF7CRU
