Maybe, but to the best of my knowledge, none of The Associated Press M-15 machines ever had unshift on space hardware installed.

My guess is the thinking was that while it might have saved a few seconds during the course of a day's 24-hour news traffic, the extra maintenance required for the USOS hardware simply wasn't worth the trade off.

I also seem to recall the AP would supply an upper case lower case chart for the few times when machines might miss a letters shift and someone would have to "translate."
