Thanks for the link to Heavy metal and it has some interesting options and I 
agree that it would be simple enough to build a hardware piece to do the 
translation of the 232 signals to either tone or loop.

I just find that one of the nice things that ITTY has going is that with a 
terminal unit that you use for radio work you can just throw a switch and 
copy the same tones coming from ITTY.

Both methods accomplish the same result.

If you want other "content" to display you could look at "HeavyMetal" also.

It also wants to talk to a serial interface, but there are circuits 
available
online to for instance use a RS232 signal line to key a TTY loop, and vice
versa. Alternately you might use a TU or build a simple circuit to take the
RS232 signal and turn it into FSK tones.
