When I first got started with RTTY, the shift was 850 Hz.
Of course EVERYONE had a CRT hooked up to use for tuning.
And you could watch a very weird phenomenon. The mark
and space tones would alternately increase and decrease.
For example, the mark amplitude would remain constant,
but you could see the space tone drop down into the noise
and come back. Or vice versa.
With the "new" 170 shift, you could still watch the signal
fade out and come back, but the differences in amplitude
between the mark and space tones would remain fairly
close.
Back in the '80s I ran a pair of Drake R4C receivers slaved
to a single VFO and built a diversity converter. It was really
fascinating to watch polarization diversity between a three
element 20 beam and a 1/4 wave ground plane antenna.
