The zip tie is a perfect cheap solution.

Another solution, and one I used back in Los Angeles, was
a an automated dead bolt system for the door. The motor
current for the door triggered the solenoids to pull back
the dead bolts on the door.

This is particularly usefull in the older one piece lift up
doors as it doesn't take much effort to pry up one corner
and slip inside.

A really BIG mistake a lot of people make, is with an attached
garage. (Like many condo complexes) They leave the door from
the garage to the house unlocked.

Security at the house out here in Texas is handled with a
couple of signs posted. "The doors here are not locked for
my protection. They are locked for yours."
