[GreenKeys] another pesky M28 CR question

Sorry to be a pest, there is just a lot for a newbie to learn about how
things were actually done in the Real World. I am puzzled and it might be
that I need to fix something or that I am dealing with yet another strange
and wonderful stunt box function (whose purpose escapes me).

I have a 28 typing unit that latches the stunt box CR Function Lever (slot
5) on CR and doesn't unlatch it until after the next character.
On CR, the spacing drum rewinds like it should and its stop ring hits the
CR Latch Bail which should (according to ye olde manual) release the CR
Lever (to re-engage the spacing pawls) - but this ain't happening because
the stunt box CR Function Lever is latched until the next time that the
stripper blade frees it.

I was thinking that this was causing a problem of the first and second
characters overprinting (because the pawls don't engage the spacing
drum until after the first character) but solved that by very careful
setting of the stop ring so that the leftmost character is in the proper
location.

OK - the question for you Old Hands is,
A) is this some function that is supposed to operate like this, or
B) do I have something maladjusted or
C) did someone install some stunt box parts the wrong way once upon a time
in this LP's history?

Crikey, trying to see & understand what is actually happening in the bowels
of these machines ain't easy.
Cheers,
