[GreenKeys] O.T. 50 years ago: where were you? What was truth what was fiction?

When the news first hit about the Russians starting to move missiles to Cuba, and
setting up missile bases there, I was less than two years out of the Navy. I was
in a 'critical MOS' (Radioman) and had a Crypto security clearance. I was wondering
if I would be recalled.

I was married by then, but with no children. My wife was employed and employable
as a school teacher, so I could have been recalled and at no great inconvenience.

Lots of annoyance, but not a lot of inconvenience. I still had all of my clothing
issue and probably 95% of it would have still fit me. I anxiously watched the
mailbox for weeks and months!

Once things cooled down, we were able to relax. My job at Ford would have been kept
available I was told. No break in seniority, etc.

About a year earlier, an event took place just weeks after I met my 'wife to be' was
the Berlin Wall. At that time I had only been out of the Navy for a few months and
thoughts of a recall were much higher then. Not a student, not married, etc.
'Ripe for picking' as the old saying goes. I got past that one and was not concerned
about a recall. For at least a year!

My six year obligation did not end until June of 1963. At that time, I could dispose
of all of the Navy clothing and if recalled, would get all new clothing. Never happened!

Still have a set of Dress Blues, though.
