    You have basically the right idea. Others on here can tell you
more about Model 28 machines; I only work on the older pre-WWII
machines.  Model 28s have lots of wiring, accessories, and filters,
and there are lots of variations on that.

    The usual "60 mA" supply is a 120VDC supply with a 2K 10W resistor
in series.  That limits the current to 60mA.  The reason so much
voltage is needed is to overcome the inductance of the selector
magnet to get a fast enough rise time.  It only takes about 3-6VDC
to pull in the selector magnet, but the pull in will be so slow
that it won't type properly.

    However, once you find the proper connections to the selector
magnet, try applying a small 9V battery to them. That should
pull in the selector magnet, and the machine should stop
"running wildly", disengage the clutches, and idle quietly.
That's a good basic test to see if you're connected to the
right place.
