From the March 1971 issue of 73 mag.
Page 65 in this issue is an article "Reading 5 code RTTY in Binary".
First you would make up a table of all the characters and alphabet from
the 5 level code. You then read the tape that you have punched and then
assign that binary total to each character in the table. As an example
"LTRS" has all 5 bits punched.
11.111
On the tape the first 2 holes binarily would have a total of 3. The
next 3 holes would total 7 so "LTRS" would be a 37. Another example
would be the letter "R". There is only one hole punched of the first 2
places so it would ahve a number 1. The 2nd set of bits would have only
the middle hole punched which would be the number 2 so the number
assigned to the character "R" is 12. 01.010
A 3rd example would be the letter "Y". It would look like this on the
tape: 10.101 with the period being the feed hole.
Binary total for this one 25.
Follow the same procedure for all other characters and symbols.
Be sure and write the binary numbers down next to each letter/character
so you will have a fast easy reference for reading your tape, providing
it's not already typed on. However the printing is not in step with the
actual holes as punched iirc?
Counting the holes and assigning the values starts from the left side of
the tape, the outside edge of the part with two holes is marked as 2,
then 1, then across the feed hole it is 4, 2, 1 for values.
Now is everyone confused? I am but i have the article so i can refer to it.
Lots of rtty articles were written in the 70's in 73 Mag. due to folks
experimenting with the new stuff, multi purpose chips.
