I had a beauty of one Ray Morrison gave me when I had started our
computer business.
it was the only one I have ever seen in the flesh. chances are it on
turns up in AZ it very well might be that one! ( and I would like to hear about
it!)

Cory,

I have one of a pair of Model 38 ASRs here that was used to
communicate between the WGN Studio in Chicago to the transmitter site
near Itasca, Illinois.
Both M38s were purchased and serviced from Teletype Corporation out of
their satellite operation in Elk Grove Village, IL.

The model 38 is the "Lady Kenmore" of the economy line of Teletype
machines. It uses a double high typewheel to print both upper and
lower case characters.
The machine has an extra wide platen to use standard sprocket feed
14.xx wide computer paper. The stand and cabinet is nicely designed
but mechanically and electrically has many of the same problems of
it's smaller sibling, the 33 ASR. When the "door spring" pulls the
print carriage back to the left margin, it really slams into the dash
pot. This physical action can cause erratic printing on the left as
well as bouncing the parallel contacts of the keyboard, reader, and
answer-back mechanism. As with many Teletype products, the interface
is a bit non-standard to be adapted to the particular user's needs. I
have a custom designed PC board that allows an EIA standard interface.

I have one complete M38 and modules of a second for parts... I will
send out a few pics when I get it running. I also have documentation
on the M38 if someone needs it.
These machines tend to be rare as they were soon replaced by the Model
43 in most applications.

Best,
Don K9TTY

P.S. The computer paper is very expensive.

Hi guys,

I recently had a look at a Model 38 ASR with its matching desk. A
beast, to be sure. Now, the truck was already full so it didn't come
home with me (at least right now), but I'm curious what the background
is on this model. Google isn't much of a help. It appears to have a
type cylinder like the 32/33 series. Did it operate at higher speeds?
What was the target market? Anything unique about this model?

Thanks,
Cory
