If you do that, I would suggest just running the tape straight
down the length of the dowel rod. While helically wrapping
it might look like more copper, having conduction issues
suddenly change the radiator at altitude isn't a good idea.

I would suggest a piece of thin wall brass tubing, from a
hobby/model shop. It will probably weight  less than the
copper tape and dowel rod.
