Doug,

Clean the cover with 409 or Fantastik spray. Wipe with a damp cloth after. Some black marks can be removed with solvent sprayed on a rag and then carefully wipe the black mark. Use the 409 first.

Dont spray any solvents into the clear plastic contact holders in the tape reader or keyboard etc. It will dissolve the plastic with disastrous results.

The screws are shipping screws.

Measure the broken clear plastic window and get a piece of single ply Plexiglass cut to fit and glue it in place with Duco Cement or model airplane glue. This glue is also good on the cover repairs as it slightly melts the plastic as it bonds. Just dont squeeze the parts together tightly as that defeats the bonding action. Glue and splint is exactly correct. Let fully cure overnight.

The Plexiglass wont have the sharp edge to tear the paper, but you can still get by with it fine.

The machine looks very clean for an older model. The biggest issue besides broken parts with be congealed grease on any sliding parts. I use Breakaway lightly and carefully after determining what is sticking.

You can find most 33 problems by visual means. Turn the fan on the motor toward the front and watch the action in the printer. No adjustments until you have eliminated any problems you see visually.

Have fun,

Wayne

Subject: [GreenKeys] ASR 33

I've finally had the chance to strip the covers off the ASR33 here at
he U of Iowa. I took some photos of the guts:
The guided tour of the machine is here:

Of more interest, here is the log for the day's work:
It looks like the broken paper-tape reader will be straightforward to
epair -- someone probably tried to use it as a hand-grip for lifting the
achine. Bad idea. But, there's ample space inside for some steel
ngles, and I can easily cut, drill and tap steel to attach it all without
dding bulk anywhere that interferes with anything. (That's under the
ug 7 topic.)
What is the plastic used for the cover? PVC? ABS? It's pretty filthy,
nd I wonder if mild soap is the strongest thing I should use, or
s there something like Windex recommended.
Knowing what the plastic is would also help figure out how to deal
ith broken prongs -- some of the hinged lids have these, and in most
ases, we have the pieces. If ABS or PVC, we can glue and splint
hem with the right solvents.
Bug 17 is a greater concern. The window in the top of the cover is
racked and entirely loose. It seems to be a different kind of plastic.
oes anyone know what kind? Repair or replace, that is the question.
Oh yes, in this photo, you can see some whopping big screws that
omeone tossed into the chassis under the paper-tape punch. What
re they? Shipping screws perhaps?

Any and all advice would be appreciated.
