The Army crates John refers to are the CH-50 and the CH-62. Photos from a
1948 publication are online here:

The -50 and --62 serve as a table and chair when not used to store the
units.
There are three other crates in the field set. The CH-53 holds paper and
spares and the CH-158 holds the RA-187 rectifier. And there is a PE-77
generator in a wood case to supply DC loop current. (Photo in the article
does not show the top of the PE-77 case.)
I have all but the CH-158. All made of thick wood and HEAVY!
