Hey folks:
Well I have been running through practice exams on _qrz.com_
(http://qrz.com/) for the technician test for the last few days, and I went through some
of the general tests as well, just to see what was involved. Since I
didn't have a callsign, I had to enter something for the qrz website. I put in
GILTTY (and later realized it said "guilty").
Anyway, the tech practice didn't seem too bad, but the general had a lot
of questions that were just sheer memorization (this freq, that bandwidth,
this rule, etc). I was bumming out that I would likely not remember all the
details. That, and the fact that I hadn't taken any test in 30 years made
me a bit apprehensive.
But the tech test went pretty well -- got 100%. I thought I'd try the
general. I got 100% on that one too. The guy that graded my test said I
should try the extra. I told him that I had not practiced for it or even
peeked at any questions. A couple of grumpier VE guys didn't think that would
be a good idea. I took their disdain as a personal challenge and took the
extra test anyway.
Sadly, I didn't do as well on the extra. I only got 86% -- but they said
that was good enough. So I guess I am an extra now (or in a week or so
when it becomes official).
A big thanks to everyone who has answered all my silly questions over the
years, and helped my understand the ham side of things.
So how did you guys get a ...TTY callsign? I want one too.
