The insurance was a big thing that kept me from retiring sooner.  It would have been something like $ 1000 per month for me and my wife and we are in good health.  

If self employed, they hit you double on the social security also. Many more hidden costs.  The company I worked for had us listed as slightly over twice what we were making per hour.  They started hiring from temporary companies to cut the cost.  They did not have to pay insurance or retirement benifits and could get them for about the same as the hired help.  Some jobs could be tought in a week, and some were simi-skilled jobs that took a while to learn.  During the bad job market some of the skilled workers that were hired as temps said a few dollars are beer than no dollars.
