Well, the rationale is that when you are an employee 
you  salary is only a part of what you get. Few jobs are 
without any perks at  all but even when they are the employer 
must pay for insurance, equipment,  etc. When  you are 
self-employed you must pay for all of this stuff  yourself. 
Even if you do casual work as a "consultant" you will have  
expenses that may not be obvious. I was not kidding about 
the five  times factor.  There are books written on this 
stuff, well to study  them if you are serious about it.
Your employer that  hires the children to replace old 
hands is making a serious mistake but  most of them base 
decisions like this on very short term bases,  essentially 
reducing short term cost.  This kind of thinking has  killed 
many businesses but try to tell that to someone who is 
trying  to pay his stockholders an excessive amount and 
support a gambling habit  and a couple of mistresses at the 
same time.  If you think I am  making this up, I watched a 
business destroy itself because one of the  three partners 
was supporting a very expensive girl friend (she worked in  
the place) and I think was embezzling.  I was in my twenties 
then  and wound up working for Hewlett-Packard so it was no 
skin off my  nose.
