Those are called "edge cards".  The idea was that you could have a
manual card file of address cards, and use them to address letters.

There are both six-bit and eight-bit variants.  8-bit is a pre-ASCII
code; the codes sort of match, but there are shift codes like Baudot.
Six-bit is unique to Flexowriters.
