"Remember Toll Quality? Now the gold standard is a hand held radio, which most people call a cell phone or mobile."
Many years ago, I was working with a contractor who was replacing a Mitel analog electronic telephone switch with a Rolm Redwood Digital switch.
I realized the Redwood desk sets didn't seem to sound as good as the analog desk sets used with the Mitel and complained to the contractor.
He finally said, you are right. The frequency response on the digital phones rolled off just above 3 KHz, tighter than the analog phones. He
said most people never notice, about 95% or more never hear the difference. I retorted that that 5% all worked in our building.
On the toll circuits, today, it is virtually impossible to tell the difference between a toll circuit and a local circuit. Some of this is due to the digital circuits, but perhaps more is that local circuit have exactly the same frequency response as toll circuits.
Granted, I am not recommending we go back to analog MUX systems, but sometimes progress isn't all progress.
