My memory is as vivid but a bit different.
In the summer of 1964 I traveled with my father and a friend and
his father to the NYC World's Fair in Flushing Meadows.
And I too remember the AT&T Bell system building and exhibit.
But what I remember is they had 3 model 28s sans cases side by
side inside a big Plexiglas box with paper winders on the paper. One
was on the AP A wire national newspaper circuit, the second was on the
UPI radio wire I think (or maybe their A newspaper wire) and the third
was on a US weather bureau public forecast wire that once in a while
spat forth zone forecasts for the NY state area.
I had already encountered model 15s (inside the usual black
steel felt lined cases with crinkle finish) at a local radio station
on the AP radio wire... and was quite familiar with how they worked
and what they looked like.
And I had seen 28s at the local WFO at Logan in Boston... but
this was the first time I got to watch a 28 mechanism print and I remember
noticing that they were using 28s on news wires rather than 15s.
All this convinced me I had to have one and that fall I bought
my first model 14 and started out playing with RTTY...
Been down hill ever since...
