Not sure how long, but for atleast the last 10 years (probably 20) you can identify in either rtty or cw. If you are operating FM or AM (true AFSK) on the vhf bands you can even identify by voice.

Subject: [GreenKeys] Need Information
I'm looking for some answers on how to insert call sign ID when transmitting RTTY. My Hal 5000 modem has a CW ID pin on the plug-in socket in back of unit, but in the normal idle state modem unit is sending 2125 Hz and when I use a key one side to CW ID pin other side of key to return grd of unit, and operate key it sends out the 2025 HZ tone. My next question I have, does the ID have to be CW or can I use the TTY to identify my call sign.
Any Information would be helpful to me.
