Tony,

That may sound strange but there's nothing abnormal about it.  Just to name 
one other area where you see the same thing much more often than not 
(vintage Atlas or Atlas-Craftsman lathes), I would roughly guess that the 
"average" price for a TH-54 (10x36) lathe in fairly good condition without any 
missing basic parts (plug it in and it would probably run) but with no 
significant accessories is at best $250.  A Quick Change Gear Box for it in similar 
complete but unrestored condition can run up to $500.  Same sort of comments 
would apply to just about any major subassembly for most vintage cars.
