Yes, I have done that. It's fun to watch. Although, it seems to drop bits when I do that, usually the LSB and prints the wrong character.

One of the very nice things about the 32/33 is that you can trouble shoot, in slow motion, with AC removed from motor, by releasing a key and cranking the motor (by the fan) around while the TD and the typing mechanism are moving in sync, from the common motor. It allows you to see exactly why the motions, you expect to see, leading from the selector magnet up to the type wheel position, are correct or "fouled" up.
On a 28 you had to run it at 100 wpm with the dam GR strobe (at ~ 99 wpm) trying to see the same thing. No FUN!

Thanks everyone for your replies. I believe I have narrowed down the problem. I found a linkage that was sticking when the problem occurred. I followed the linkage which connects to the "Rotary Drive Arm" through the "Third Pulse Lever". The drive arm is sticking under the right "rack" that rotates the print head. The "rack" is extended farthest on characters like the letter "O" that is causing the problem and allows the "Rotary Drive Arm) to get under the right "rack". It will dislodge by itself with some characters like "line feed". I can pull back slightly on the left "rack" and it will pop back up where it belongs. I have included page 4-48 of the manual (273B_Mod32_33_TechMan_Jan63.pdf from Bitsavers). I'm not sure if it needs adjustment or a part is worn. I don't want to start bending linkages without knowing what I'm doing.
I appreciate any help you can provide.
Clay

Clay,
Andy has given you good advice, but dont make any adjusments until you check for debris in the typewheel area, missing springs and broken or loose carriage bearings as I mentioned before.

If the tape punches correctly the keyboard and TD are good.... at least the indication points to a printer problem. You seem to be spot on with "Home position" of the Typewheel" (Head) being the problem.
The the problem your explaining here is a TypeWheel Rotational problem.
Your prob apears to be a reversed motion of the type wheel after a failed reset.
Spring tension may explain the intermittent problems or a pry adjustment may be slipping due to wear or a loose screw ? Although you may find other problems along the way ...?... its mainly happening to the one incorrect character and intermittently others
Find Bul 310B Vol 2 Sec 574-122-700TC (Not sure which site I found it before)
look at the "Carriage area" (pages 50 - 69)
Several "pry point adjustments and Spring tension's that could be the gremlin here.
2nd row of the type wheel: (movement direction of the type wheel from home.)
G F E D C B A @ H I J K L M N O
|......................| |.....................|
( clock wise counter clockwise)
The type wheel layout can be found in Bul 310B Vol 1 Pg 22 ( I have Iss 3)
and the operation of the rotary positioning mechanism are on pg's 22 - 26.
Does anyone know if they are available on-line anywhere yet?
I can attempt to copy these pages for you if they arn't...
(I have the 310B vol 1 & 2 ASR/KSR/RO principles of operation and adjustments also Bul 1184B parts.)
Andy

I have a model 33 with an intermittent printing problem. Actually, it seems to be getting worse. I believe it's in the print head lift / rotate area and not an ASCII decoding problem. It only happens to a few characters and not related to a particular bit. It will also punch the correct bit pattern while printing the wrong character. It will print correctly all characters except the letter "O" which will print the letter "N", then other characters will begin to print wrong like "A" will print an "I" (but only after trying to print an "O"). Things will go back to normal after a carriage return. The letter "O" will print correctly at the beginning of the line a couple times and then start printing "N", like OONNNNNNN (all letters should be "O") but it will punch all "O"'s correctly on the paper tape. Another example: if I type "AAAAAAAOOOOOOAAAAAA" it will print "AAAAAAANNNNNNIIIIII" Other characters will print wrong, but only after you try to print an "O". It's like the letter "O" is confusing the positioning on the head. I think other characters will also cause the problem intermittently.
Any ideas?
Clay
