Yes, we did that to our office administrator also at our computer
company in the early 80s as we had some of the non standard balls
.. probably one GE used on the IBM typers of their computer systems
or one off the IBM reservation terminals . We would postpone
looking at it for a fix until AFTER she went to the rest room whereas we
would switch out the ball to a regular one... and upon her return go over
and have her turn the IBM Selectric on and show us and of course we
would see the then normal type and exclaim OH... WHAT PROBLEM! <evil
grin>

I have to share this.

While working at TRW in 1973-77, I acquired one of the "special"
golf balls for an IBM I/O Selectric.

Periodically, I would sneak into the office and switch balls on the
secretary's typewriter.

Of course, it printed gibberish. They would call the lab where I
worked and asked if I could fix it for them.

I'd head up to the office, "Tell ya what, why don't you hustle
down to the cafeteria and get me a doughnut and a cup of
coffee. I'll have it fixed by the time you get back."

I did that for two years.
