For anyone that gets a Baofeng - download the chirp program... this
program will program the 5r and many other brands.

-import your radio
-get list from repeater asoc site
-add it and export to radio
-you will have more channels than you will even be able to use!

of course you are limited on some as the small antenna does not have
that good of a reach.
but phx metro is alive with freqs..

In the sparse little manual that came with mine it does not mention which
fcc parts for which it has been certified. The front cover has the fcc and
ce logos though, so it must be legal!

Apparently different vintages have different freq ranges depending on the
(non-upgradable) firmware version.

Mine is only a month old, and I can rx/tx on:

136.000 to 174.995
400.000 to 520.995

I don't know about the Baofeng, but several of the other brands have been
through a FCC type certification process for use on some of the public
service bands. I think it is part 90 certified I don't think it is part 95
certified, but I may be wrong on which parts they are certified on.

They are legal to use on the services they have been certified for. That
is one of the selling points for some of the other brands I have kept up
with.

Ham radios have for a number of years been able to operate out if the ham
bands. Sometimes without any modification, and sometimes just by clipping a
wire or diode.
They were not usually certified to be legal to transmitt out of the ham
bands.

To be legal for some services, the radio must be programmed in certain
ways.

I'm not sure of what you mean by the FCC comment. It is my understanding
the FCC sets the bands and prosecutes those who transmit on frequencies for
which they don't have a license. But to my knowledge the FCC does not block
the construction of any broadcast equipment, nor do they block the sale of
such equipment, based on its capabilities. Or do I have it wrong?
