Dave, et al,
Like most computer programs, MMTTY has lots of options, which makes it
very flexible, but also means that it is easy to get it set up in a way
that it does not work for you!!
First thing to do is to click the "HAM" button in the upper center of
the screen. This is a default setting for 60 WPM & 170 hz shift (but the
default can be changed in the Options - see below). There is a "Reverse"
button right next to it.
Audio level should be high enough to show a green bar right below those
buttons. The vertical line in the bar is a squelch level. It is turned
on & off by the "SQ" button above the bar. The squelch level line can be
moved by clicking on it and dragging it.
In the upper right corner of the screen, there should be some displays.
(If not, in the top Menu, go to View/FFT Display and View/XY scope and
click on them. The "FFT display" shows the audio frequency spectrum
that you are trying to decode. There should be two peaks (mark & space)
and there are two vertical lines that should line up with the peaks.
(Sensitivity and width can be controlled on the Menu View tab.) The XY
Scope display should give you the typical "cross hairs" display when you
are properly tuned in. Vertical line is space and horizontal line is
mark. If you get a good cross display, but you are printing garble,
either the signal is reversed, you have the wrong baud rate, it is not a
5-level baudot code or it is encrypted.
You can check and control the baud rate by clicking the third word (the
one under "Shift") in the "Demodulator" section. This changes this
window to show and select baud rate.
If none of these help, there may be something messed up in the setup.
Go the Menu Option/Setup MMTTY and go through all the tabs looking for
something that doesn't look right. For example, go to the "Decode" tab
and make sure it is set for "5bit" code and go to "Demodulator" and
check that the "HAM Default" is Mark=2125 & shift = 170.
There is a manual on line, I assume at the same site where you
downloaded the program. If you don't find it I can send you a copy. It
is 111 pages (no I have not read it all!!) but only 1.2 MB. There is
also a separate little file that needs to be added if you want to output
MMTTY to a serial or USB port.
Hope this helps!
If not, give some more details of what you see on the settings & displays.
