What about white LEDs? They're small -- usually. They don't produce
much heat -- usually. And are driven on voltages which you can find
small rectifiers for -- usually.
I say usually, since who knows, you might pick one of those industrial
strength super LEDs that cost a small fortune.
Either way, LEDs are nice for lighting.
