P.S on the bizarro investigative technique:

1) Is the response time of a junk-box LDR on the order of 1 millisecond? 
  (Don't know myself.)

2) Since 60 cycles has a period of ~16 milliseconds, that is the same 
order of magnitude as a 45.5 baud bit.  If the signal to ambient- 
artificial-light-noise (from florescent or incandescent shop lighting) 
is so low that it is difficult to discern the signal, you might want to 
turn the shop lighting out and use a flashlight during the experiment. 
(And obviously, the LED should be smooth DC powered...)
