There's a mechanical device to turn off the motor
on some Teletypes. I've seen it on Model 14 machines.
There's a leadscrew-like mechanism which advances as
the machine idles and resets on any non-idle character.
When it runs out, it opens a set of contacts to stop the motor.
A second set of contacts up near the selector closes when the
selector magnet releases the clutch, and starts the motor.

The sending end starts by sending a BREAK
to wake up the other end, waits a few seconds for
the motor to come up to speed, and then starts sending.

Later machines used various motor control relay arrangements.
There's a long series of patents in this area:

1,898,921 (uses a slow polar relay)
1,921,990 (multiple relays)
3.317,660 (uses a stepping switch)
