Surpisingly the new mother board I bought earlier this year has a 
parallel port on it as well as a serial port. I guess not many 
manufacturers bother to connect them to the back panel these days. My 
trusty bits box in the loft had the required parallel port connector, 
ribbon cable and back panel insert.

So now I have an i5, quad-core, Windows 7 machine with a parallel port. 
Pity I don't have a use for it! The parallel printer is now hooked 
straight onto the network for sharing reasons. It was quite easy (and 
cheap) to find an Ethernet to parallel port adapter.
