Thanks Steve and also to everyone else for their valued input.
Steve I believe the cover is for the mechanical part only, with the keyboard uncovered. They are been sold in an antique shop so it could be that the owner does not really know what these things are worth - without having much knowledge myself I knew that it is a lot of money for something in this genre (ie. historically valuable but practically of no value unless someone is prepared to restore them and use them as a working display).
I'll be back on the weekend to have a thorough look at both units and see if I can get them cheap, not sure if I fancy my chances though at $500 for the pair!
Greg.

Greg,
I would have to agree with the others that $250.00 is quite a bit higher than the average for even a known working machine. Maybe for the pair, and even then both would have to be in excellent working condition.
The "A" in the model number indicates that cotter pins were used to secure linkages versus the "E" rings of the later models. A lot of the parts for the TT-4 are interchangeable for the later TT-98 and higher model numbers.
You mentioned that one machine had a cover and the other one didn't. There were actually two "covers" on these machines. One covered the main mechanical portion of the machine and the second cover actually enclosed the machine in a water tight container. Which "cover" are you referring to in your statement?

Hello. I have found two Kleinschmidt TT-4A teletypewriters for sale locally (here in Australia). I had only enough time to take a fleeting glance at the machines as I was on a short break from my work, one has a cover and one does not. He has tagged the machines as being made in 1948 but I think they may be more modern than this.

He wants $250 each and as I do not know if they even work (condition etc) I think that is an excessive price and I would have to beat him down quite a bit before I was interested.

Like I said they look to be in OK condition.
