I have several ancient 4oz bottles of “Sperm Oil” that I got from my grandfather’s shop years ago (he was a gun builder) I assume this is the stuff that is being contemplated, I opened one bottle, and it did not smell rancid. It’s probably at least fifty years old, probably more like sixty!

Adrian,
Whale oil "may" be available outside of the U.S. but it cannot be imported along with other whale products.
Whale oil when compared to modern synthetic lubricant is inferior for machinery like clocks and office machinery. It does go rancid, reacts with brass to form sticky sludge.
The topic of teleprinter lubrication has been covered many times and no doubt many more.
If you want to do your own research see:
Nye Lubricants <http://www.nyelubricants.com/>
You will also find articles of the history of Nye and whale oil...
I use their lubricants for my model 19 machine without a problem...
