The TMC TIS-3 is such a unit. Uses 12AX7's and the like. TIS means  
Tone Intelligence System.  (There may well have been a TIS-1 and TIS-2  
but I am unfamiliar with them.)  All TMC stuff was military grade and  
carried military nomenclature in many cases.
