Media broker Glenn Serafin says "Back when I was a young AP salesman in the
mid-Atlantic, the AP delivered the news to its members on M-15 Teletype
printers, a rugged piece of equipment whose clanking sounds you still can
hear if you listen to 1010 WINS in New York. The AP was pretty tough on
getting paid. If 2-3 months went by without payment, guys like me were sent
to the station to solve the problem. After that, without payment, it was
policy to terminate the telco line and dispatch a technician to retrieve the
equipment, which was AP property. This unfortunately happened at a station
in Virginia, when an AP tech showed up and took the M-15 while the general
manager was at lunch. When the GM got back, the staff told him what
happened. The GM promptly called the Virginia State Police to say the
station had been robbed of printing equipment and that the perpetrator was
headed to Richmond. Sure enough, the AP tech got stopped, arrested and was
held on suspicion of robbery. It took several hours to sort out the mess,
but the tech finally was released." Serafin says "You can't make this stuff
up." Got your own real-life story about radio? Share it with the industry
