While I have not tried it as a penetrating oil, I did use a homade gun cleaner from a famous gun writer called Ed's Red on a Model 15 printer that had locked up from non use and a bunch of old oil/wd40. It cleaned all the old junk out of it. Here is the makeup for it.

CONTENTS: Ed's Red Bore Cleaner

1 part Dexron II or IIe ATF, GM Spec. D-20265 or later.
1 part Kerosene - deodorized, K1
1 part Aliphatic Mineral Spirits, or Stoddard Solvent,
Fed. Spec. TT-T-2981F, CAS #64741-49-9 (aka "Varsol")
1 part Acetone, CAS #67-64-1.

It has the Acetone and ATF plus some other cleaners in it.
I am going to have to try it on some stuck bolts one day and compair it to the Kroil.
