I would assume because some coded the function lever to do that for the
specific code. This can be suppressed, assuming you do not want an answer
back active at all.
One nice thing about the 32/33 machines is that you can hand crank them with
a particular keyboard character pressed to watch in slow motion how things
are working. (there is a particular had wheel that fits on the end of the
shaft to make this easy).  Doing this allows you to see how the code bars
move to see if this correct action or  malfunction.

Howdy Folks,

I have a nice Model 32 that, upon receiving the upper case "4" or the "$" 
symbol, starts the "Here Is" drum turning.  I don't like that.

Any thoughts as to why?
