I can vouch for the "platen restorer" type products,  When I worked at Burroughs / Unisys we used it all the time on the L / TC line of machines. It would do a nice job as long as the platen was not indented from the type-ball. Just use very sparingly, or it can become a gooey mess as it will become too soft and the type will become fuzzy, and as mentioned, don't breathe the fumes.
