[GreenKeys] [Bulk] QUESTION: stress on a 28 running open -vs- printing data

Hmmmmmm

The 28's are designed to take advantage of timed momentum (my phrase).
While
I am sure the clutches are happy when the typing unit is running open,
the rest of the machine is being stressed past it's operational
parameters. Just watch the front plate mechanism when the machine is
running open (but don't stick your fingers, or anything else, into
it). The
type hammer carriage and the typebox positioning parts are especially
frenetic!
If the frontplate clutch is locked, the machine could probably run
open
for a long time and not suffer any damage.

A 15 could probably run open forever....!

Subject: [Bulk] [GreenKeys] QUESTION: stress on a 28 running open -vs-
printing data

GE OMs;

To Jack Hart - and all the other TTY gurus;

A long time ago I was told that a Teletype machine "running open"
would tear itself apart - but printing normally was fine.

Well, - I'm looking at my 2 28's right now - and I don't see how
"running open" is anymore stressful on it than printing.

When it's running open it just continues to "do its thing" at what
I would call a stable state. It doesn't seem to be under any kind of
stress that would be in excess of what it would be under, under normal
printing conditions - other than it is running at a few OPS more than
it would be while printing data.

What say you?

UE,
W6ESE - tony
