In response to my own question, and I am surprised no one else has 
beaten me over the head yet, of course tty is possible over Internet as 
that's what ITTY is doing.

So the problems I have seen are Asterisk issues and maybe related to 
using a gateway. I will report back when I can get a colleague in Bath 
set up for a direct connection with CNET and his creed 444.
