Good old fsk is still being used to some extent on the ham bands.  Usually the 60 wpm speed with 170 hz shift.  

Here is a place to go to get some sound card programs to check out.  For receive only you can just place the computer microphone next to the receiver speaker.  Look for MMTTY for a good rtty program.
