He's free to ask any price he wants.

...and everyone else if free to not buy it.

This happens all the time on feebay.  Sellers seeking outrageous 
prices.  The result is pretty darn uniform: listings expiring with no 
bids.  This is also the way most surplus stores operated until they went 
out of business.  The stores that survived managed to find the balance 
where enough people bought items, enough deals were made given the 
quality of their merchandise, such that they could make a suitable profit.

Once I move I will be looking for a nice 28 ASR, but there are plenty of 
other things I will be looking for as well, so the only thing a $1000 
machine asking price will provide me is humor value.
