Sometimes people don't want to sell things, but want to know what they are worth.  They put things out for sell and then see what they are offered for them. 

 I let a guy at work have a good 'what for' and told him never to offer me anything for sell.  I had been talking to another fellow at work about something he had for sell and this guy overheard us and butted in. Said he had something like I was looking for and wanted to know what I would offer for it.  I told him and he said he did not want to sell it, but just wanted to know what I would offer.

I am not sure how much iron is worth now as scrap , but that is all I would offer for the old machines.  May have to go up from there, but that is where I would start.

  I would love to have that machine, so I wrote him asking if he had slipped
  decimal point when he posted his listing. I also inquired if he had done any
  research of recent Teletype market prices. He wrote back this evening and
  appreciated the information I provided, but the machine was priceless to him
  and the price was still $1,000. I guess we will know where to find this
  machine in the future. I don't believe it is going anywhere soon.
