A buddy of mine, and I bought 4-5 of them from J J Glass in Los
Angeles in the mid '70s. Using 2 meter AM, we sent several
copies of Don Martin cartoons back and forth. Yeah, it was a real
hoot watching the smoke curl up from the paper as it was doing
it's "receive" routine.

Well yes, that and "Not invented here." I've run into that a lot.

While doing an upgrade to some power supply cabling, we sub-
stituted #12 AWG for the #16 that was originally in place. To make
it work, of course, we clipped a few strands at the ends to fit the
wire into the solder cups on the connector. After we told the
vendor about the change, a few days later we were asked, "What
size #12 wire are you using? Our #12 won't fit."
