Selenium rectifiers have a 15 to at best 60 year shelf or service life.  
The average is I think close to 25.  I don't recommend firing up any equipment 
today that applies more than 5 or 6 volts to them (either AC in rectifier 
service or DC in ballast regulator service).  At those low voltages they tend 
to just not work instead of giving off a large cloud of smoke.  I know that 
there will be exceptions but the odds are agin' you.  Fortunately, all but 
the ballast regulator applications are a straightforward silicon 
replacement.

Otherwise, it sounds like a fun trip so far.
