FYI, I also use HeavyMetal to run my Model 33 which of course is an ASCII machine. I send the output of the COM port to a TeleByte 65A (RS232 to Current Loop converter) to the Model 33. You just have to change a few parameters in the HeavyMetal setup. My 9 year old daughter uses the Model 33 every night to print out the "Today in History" feed from AP listed in one of the HeavyMetal main menus.
