Hello Lee et al;
Well - I'll make a suggestion from time to time too. I don't expect
anyone to take it. If they do, that's nice if they don't, that's OK
too.
I think it shows that [we] care for what the other ham is
interested in and are trying to help him with his project.
I don't know much about SDR's. I have a Ten-Tec ORION II and it
is a pretty nice rig - but I would trade it in a second for the
pair of 80M ARC-5's and a long extension cord (antenna) that I
loaded-up into when I first got my Novice license. Those days
ham radio was a blast! Seems the more fancy my equipment got,
the less the fun was.
And right now I am playing around with a regenerative receiver.
I have more fun playing with that thing then I do with the ORION II.
RTTY was the same for me: Finding out what that strange noise was
around 14.080-14:095MHz when I visited a Net Control Air Force MARS
station and he showed me a Model 15 and 19 was fascinating! I was
hooked!. I got ahold of a Model 15, built a T.U. from the ARRL Handbook,
and started receiving. By the time I got set-up to transmit, I "knew
the ropes" and was able to blend-in with the RTTY'ers (more or less).
I loved the Autostart group on 14.075 because of the strict protocol
and the knowledge. Now, since anyone can hook up a soundcard and get
on the digital modes, it's like a free-for-all. I've lost much of my
RTTY interest because of the agravation of trying to work someone who
is sending data before his transmitter kicks in, drops off in mid-sentence,
makes 1-minute QSO's, doesn't use auto CR/LF, overtypes lines, etc.
I'd love to see an autostart group reform - but I don't think that will
ever happen again. We tried several years ago, and after everyone put in
their demands of how it should operate, no one ever got on the air.
I don't know why I'm so cranky this morning... :-)
UE,
