Pete, you were just busy staring at the secretary... you forgot those Selectrics
came with a service contract and a field maintenance man (in a suit, with white
shirt) would do PM on those machines once a month, and never get anything dirty,
even his own hands. He was not staring at the secretary.

Subject: [GreenKeys] Selectric's
I'll toss one in for the other side
OK, they were not 15's or 28's. But I've seen Selectrics that where
from the Saber system and they had plenty of hours. I knew one of the
FE's and if kept oiled etc they did pretty well. I use to sit in front
of two one was the console to a 360 and the other a APL terminal. I
don't remember anything going bad. Other then once when someone
knocked a pretty big 7up into one.
Would be interesting to dig through the (i guess now nonexistent)
archives of IBM service records. Many Selectric's did as much of not
more work then many tty's. For those of use from before computers on
our desks, and worked at big corporations, remember the department or
exec' secretary Selectric ever being quiet ? When I started at
Tektronix the senior sec there typed so fast she would jam them, she
could type and talk to you at the same time as well. I don't remember
that thing ever being quiet.
Maybe it was just poor maintenance ?
I'd love to have one again.

PS looking for a APL PC keyboard.
