So it's jumping into FIGS at random places without being commanded to
do so.

Now see if the shift code bar is shifting when it jumps into FIGS or if
it isn't.

If it isn't then the trouble is in the front plate mechanism or in the
way the front plate connects to the code bars.  If it is then the trouble
is in the stunt box or the shifter mechanism that moves the shift code 
bar.

That is assuming you are getting the correct characters decoded, LTRS or
FIGS case.
