Just to add my 2 cents ...

One situation where sniping software may actually be to your disadvantage 
is where there are no bids on an item.

I'm convinced that when a lot of people see an item with no bids, 
(especially in the last day or 2) they think that there is limited interest 
and figure that gee I wouldn't mind having it at that price.

So, if it's something that I'm really interested in, I will often put in a 
bid of about half of what I would ultimately pay for it.
The thought being that it will weed out the non-serious bidders who just 
bid. If you look at the bidders list after an auction closes, you will 
notice that a LOT of people only put in one bid at the beginning.

As in everything in life, it's hard to generalize without exceptions.
